"Close your eyes," Clark whispered, gently stroking Lex's bruised face. His lover's weary eyes kept drifting closed only for him to forcibly pop them back open again. "Try to sleep. Rest." He was clearly scared to sleep. The superhero's other hand was still holding Lex's left, and he squeezed it now whispering a promise, "I'll be here when you wake back up."
"Somebody'll need you," Lex murmured, his exhausted words tearing at Clark's heart. His eyelashes fluttered as he fought to maintain consciousness.
"Doesn't matter if they do," Clark whispered words he should've realized long ago. "There are other heroes who can save them. There's only one you." And only one me. Clearly, Lex doubted he loved him enough to stay by him even now. In all honesty, Clark couldn't blame him. How many times had he left him, after all, to care for someone else, a stranger or, at the very least, someone he surely could not love as much as this man now laying beside him, this man who he'd come so close to losing.
Clark kissed Lex's knuckles, his forehead, his cheek, and finally his lips. "I'll be here," he swore. "I won't leave you for anything."
