"Did you always want to be a cop?" the little girl asks.
Sydney pauses. Her teeth catch nervously at her bottom lip. A strong hand suddenly touches her shoulder, sending reassuring warmth through the meager touch. She glances back at her partner and knows, from the warning look in Gage's eyes, that he's remembering the same thing she is. No, they didn't always want to be cops, but it was the better alternative that Walker offered them. "No."
"What made you decide to be one?"
She hesitates again, still not wanting to tell the child the truth. They had not had very much choice in joining the Rangers, but they had had a choice in staying. She'd stayed for two reasons, and only one of them was behind her. She shrugs. "I was tired of seeing people I love get hurt, so I wanted to do something about it."
"If you hadn't joined the police, what else would you have been?"
She's not about to tell the girl how close she came to a criminal life. Instead, looking back at Gage, she shrugs. "I dunno. Maybe a housewife?"
She's surprised when he laughs and claps her shoulder. "You're always be more than a housewife."
She was only teasing, but she's surprised and perhaps a bit disturbed by his reaction. Still, when she was this girl's age, she'd thought that a meager position as a housewife was no place for any real woman. She was all for marriage, but a strong woman did more with her wife than just marry a man and have kids. Nonetheless, there's only one more thing she really wants to do with her life. She could kick Gage for making fun of it until he smiles and winks and she realizes he, too, was only kidding.
