His muscles were sore. They ached with a searing, red-hot pain all throughout his body. Yet, somehow, tonight, he couldn't seem to care. He was aware of the pain. He was aware of hurting very, very much and yearning for a rest, but he didn't actually feel the pain the way he would normally. Instead with every cobweb he shot, he swung a bit higher. He had no intentions of retiring for the night any time soon. Even with the crime wave being down at last, he just didn't want to go home yet.
There was something about Manhattan at night, Peter thought joyfully, swinging still higher. The city lights seemed to somehow glisten, making the big place even bigger and brighter. He could hear the usual rush of traffic and blaring horns, but they didn't impede on the beauty of the night life. They barely even entered his mind.
He realized with a jolt, as he swung to the top of the tallest building on the street, why the city seemed so much better tonight. It wasn't the city itself. It wasn't the lack of crime, screams, or thugs. It wasn't even how successful he'd been at stopping the gang or the crime wave they'd caused. It was all because he was happy, and he was happy because of her.
As beautiful as the city was, as lovely as the moon from his viewpoint on top of one of the tallest buildings in the city, as lovely as anything else was, his sweet Mary Jane was lovelier by far. She was the reason everything seemed better and brighter tonight. He may have saved the city. He may have saved her life. But she saved him with each smile she cast upon him, and especially, he thought, his fingers raising unconsciously to his tingling lips, every kiss with which she rewarded him.
It was true, he thought, love did make people do crazy things. It changed men, and women, he presumed, for the better. At least he knew it had changed him. Protecting the city was no longer just about avenging Uncle Ben, or even about making sure that what had happened to him didn't happen again to any one else. It was about protecting the people who lived here, about protecting their future, about protecting Mary Jane and protecting their future. Peter beamed underneath his black and red mask. He had never been happier than today when he'd finally dared to propose and his beloved, cherished MJ had actually accepted.
They were to be wed! He wanted to shout the news from the top of this very building. He wanted to blaze it across the Daily Bugle's headlines. He wanted every person on the face of God's green Earth to know that the most beautiful woman in the world was choosing to marry him, lowly Peter Parker. Rather or not they actually knew them didn't matter in the least to Peter; he just wanted the whole world to know.
His heart bursting, Peter flipped up into the air and let scream one, single word. "YES!" It was the most beautiful world in the English language, he recognized now. It was the word he wanted to shout with all his might still, though he just had. He had a feeling he could scream it a thousand times more and still not be tired. It was the word his Mary Jane, his fiancee, had shouted earlier this evening. It was perhaps the most important word they'd both be ushering soon, when the Priest stood before them and legally made them husband and wife. He already loved her as his wife; now, finally, he was going to get to show the world how much he loved her!
He laughed suddenly at that inane idea. He could marry MJ a thousand times over, give her the greatest, fanciest, most expensive wedding (if he had the money) in all of history, and it still wouldn't come close to showing how much he actually loved her. He loved that beautiful woman who was crazy enough to take on villains beside him when they attacked them together with all that he was, all that he'd ever been, and he knew, all that he ever would be. Yeah, "yes" was a great word, marriage was a wonderful constitution, but nothing would ever show just how incredibly much he loved his woman. Nothing ever could.
Fifty years after their marriage, he decided, he'd marry her again, renew their vows again before the world, but even that still wouldn't show how much he really loved her. He couldn't imagine anything that would ever be able to successfully show the depth of his love for his sweet Mary Jane, but it thudded loudly through his heart tonight, making everything seem brighter, better, more glorious in all ways . . .
"YES! MY MARY JANE SAID YES!" he shouted again, somersaulting through the air and, for a rare change, just having fun with his web slinging. He couldn't imagine anything that would ever be able to accurately show how much he loved her, but he was going to gladly spend the rest of his life striving toward finding that thing and making sure that, even if he couldn't show it, she always knew it and never, ever doubted the depth, strength, or wonderfulness of their love or him again.
