The day was perfect. Spring was in the air, and so, too, as cliche as it was, was love. Birds were singing. A gentle breeze was blowing, and she could hear it carrying some basic instrumental music from where she neither knew nor cared to know. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and best of all, the man she loved had his beefy arms wrapped tightly around her.

She inclined in his embrace, her red head resting against his shoulder. She should have dyed her hair long ago. She should have become an X-Man long ago. She should have made herself everything he wanted so very long ago. That would have saved them both a great deal of trouble and herself heartache to which she'd never admit aloud. Now her heart sang with a song more beautiful than any bird's or music.

"There's something I've been meaning to ask you," he whispered into her ear before kissing its ridge. Gently, he moved her from his lap and then swung around to kneel beside her on their checkered picnic blanket.

She preened before him, her posture straight, her smile jubilant. Her eyes sparkled; she'd never looked prettier than she did that moment, practically glowing in love. "What is it?" she asked, batting her eyelashes. She could have easily gleamed the thought from his mind, but that was yet another thing she no longer did out of her respect and love for him and her desire to stay with him and be the woman he both wanted and deserved. She still knew what was coming; she'd known for a while and had been preparing for this very moment. Their whole lives, she thought, had been leading to this grand culmination.

She'd meant to stay serious and not give herself away. She'd meant to let him make it a surprise, but she squealed when he took the ring box out of his pocket. He grinned, his red eyes -- she'd long ago helped him learn to control his powers to that point he no longer needed his ruby quartz glasses -- shining just as brilliantly as hers with all the love he finally felt for her alone. "Emma, I've been wanting to ask you. Will you make me the happiest man alive? Will you never leave my side again? Will you marry me?"

"YES!" she screamed in triumph, throwing her arms around him and herself into him. She was his entirely; she had been since the first moment he'd kissed her, since the first moment he'd proven his love to her, since the changes she had made in herself for him had finally convinced him that Jean Grey was not his ideal soul mate and he'd thrown the wretch to the side. Birds flew from the trees as they kissed and kissed, their joined hands proof that they were beginning together on their happily ever after.

Emma woke with fresh tears on her cheeks. She wiped them away with a sneer. Yes, she missed Scott, but leaving her was his loss, not hers. She swung her long legs out of her canopy bed, then stood and walked over to the mirror. There, she surveyed the damage on her beauty. Red, puffy eyes stared back at her. Her blonde hair was a mess, but it was blonde. She sneered. As though she'd ever dye her hair red, especially for some pathetic man!

And yet . . . Yet she would still do almost anything for his love, almost anything to bring Scott back to her, but it wasn't going to happen out of his own free will. If she left it up to him, his life, and their relationship, would remain a catastrophe. As all strong men did, he needed a strong not beside him or behind him but directing him. He needed her to make his decisions for him so they could be together happily ever after.

She smiled. Her blood, red lips opened into a cackling laughter that echoed all throughout her castle, the castle she'd taken from her former coheadmaster. Banshee didn't need it, after all, now that he was dead. He'd thought he'd succeeded in taking so much from her, but he was utterly and completely wrong. Their students, at least those who remained, would still be hers one day. All the X-Men would be.

Strong arms suddenly wrapped around her and brought her willingly back into an even stronger chest. Lips gently kissed her blonde hair that was radiant just the way God had intended it. She sighed with satisfaction as Scott's lips then angled into her neck. "Dreaming of them again?" he asked. She could feel his need rubbing against her backside.

"Always," she breathed, wiping away her tears. Oh, what she wouldn't do to have him act this way of his own free will! But he never would, she reminded herself. She'd always had to take what she wanted, and Scott Summers was no different.

"Come back to bed," he murmured into her ear, lipping her lobe. "Let me make you forget about them."

"Of course," she murmured in reply and let him think he was leading her as they returned to her bed. The X-Men would be hers. The happily ever after she deserved would be hers. And it all started with their supposedly fearless leader and a kiss no one could trace, one not from her lips to his but from her mind to his. Her body might be his, but his soul was hers forever more.

The End
