Blue eyes glowered at the glittery object before them. "Take it anywhere, Gus Gus," the Queen finally spoke, almost indignantly spitting. "I don't care where. Just get it out of my sight!" Her head lowered into her gloved hand, and she shook, almost crying.
The fat mouse beside her right hand waved at two female mice, who quickly gestured to an entire group of rodents. They scurried in and scurried away, taking the accursed crown with them. Gus patted his Queen's hand, as his best friend, Jacques, was already doing on her other side.
"Poor Cindyrella!" He'd only ever wanted for his friend to be happy, but happiness continued to elude her. They were all a great deal better off in this new world, but his Cindyrella was perhaps even more upset now than she had been before they had hooked her up with the Prince. Sometimes Gus Gus hated that Prince fellow. He seemed to no good for his Cindyrella.
"There, there," Suzy soothed, coming up and also patting their Queen's hand. Her birds were singing. The dog slept beside her feet, twitching as though his dreams hinted of the trouble around him. He barked once, moved his head to the top of Cindyrella's foot, and laid still. The mice continued to crowd around her, each patting her hand or foot or whatever part of her they could reach. She was their Queen as much as the humans', even more so really for she had been theirs long before the humans had ever taken notice of her beauty.
"It never ends," Cinderella murmured wearily.
"It can," Suzy announced.
"How?" Cinderella asked, moving her fingers away from her eyes just enough that she could peer down at the little, female mouse.
"Easy. Go on vacay!" She threw her tiny hands up.
Cinderella smiled and actually laughed for the first time that long day. "Oh, Suzy, if only I could!"
"You Queen," Jacques pointed out. "Queen do what Queen want!"
"No," Cinderella gently corrected him, shaking her head. "A good Queen does not simply do what she wants, nor does a good King. Charming is just as tired. If only the other kingdoms would stop trying to wage war, we could perhaps rest. Our kingdom is peaceful, but we're looked at by so many to set an example."
"So," Suzy said, waving her needle, "Big Sister go on vacay! Stop being Big Sister."
"Big Sister?" Cinderella frowned down at her.
"Yup yup." Jacques eagerly bobbed his head in agreement.
"That's what they all say, Cindyrella. You Big Sister."
"Well, Big Sister is tired," Cinderella spoke the words with ease, but the mice heard her heavy defeat in her tone.
"So go vacay!" Suzy insisted.
"You take care of yours," added Mary, who very rarely spoke unless she had something of great importance to say, such as now. "You always have. You always took care of us and the other animals, even Lucifer." The other mice nodded in agreement though Gus Gus jumped at the name of the cat and Jacques squeaked. "You always take care of Charming and all your subjects. I watch. Every day, I watch from the walls and the paintings. You do not let a single subject be troubled for long."
"But they are yours. We are yours. These other places . . . " she said simply, "are not. Rest, Cinderella. Please. Take a break. What will happen to you if you do not? What will happen to your people, to us, your family, if you do not?"
"You must care for yourself," Suzy agreed, stroking her hand, "if you are to care for any one else. If Cindyrella falls, we all fall."
"Fall down, go boom!" Gus Gus let his legs collapse and fell onto his round, brown bottom.
Suzy stroke his wide shoulders with her needle. "This is no laughing matter, Gus Gus! Cindyrella needs rest!"
Cinderella stifled a yawn behind her gloved hand. "I suppose . . . " She yawned again. " . . . a few days would not hurt." Surely the other kingdoms could handle their own problems that long. Surely the rest of the world could leave her little piece of it alone long enough for her to rest some.
She could advise that they seek counsel from Queen Snow, Aurora, or even Ariel in her stead, although she knew, from experience, that the advice the latter two might give was definitely questionable. The former had been raised by the Fae and knew little of the human world such as it was, and the latter could barely use a fork properly! Of course, with her friend, Snow, it was the matter of reaching through all the little men to actually get to her and earn a moment to talk in private with her. But they would all be more than willing to help, she knew.
"Stop being Big Sister!" She looked imploringly up at her, her tiny eyes seeming to hold far more knowledge than was possible for her young age. "They don't like Big Sister, you know? They fuss about Big Sister always trying to help, always putting her nose where it doesn't belong."
"No, I did not," Cinderella mused and then laughed as Suzy looked pointedly at her other sisters beyond Mary, her whiskers twitching. Cinderella gently stroked the top of Suzy's head with a single fingertip as she conceded, "Very well. I will rest. One week. I will take one week's break, and then I will go back to work."
Behind her, having walked silently up to the throne, Charming smiled. "Thank you," he told the mice. "I had hoped she would listen to you." Bowing, he took his wife's hand. "And I know, my dearest, know just the place." He whisked her away, her mice clambering up them both to not be forgotten, before she could change her mind. Behind them, Bruno yipped and slept peacefully on, beginning to smile at last.
