Brown eyes pop wide open in the dark night. A scream's on the verge of splitting from her throat, but she bites her lip, containing it just in time. She glances around, terrified, and only begins to settle down again not when she sends her surroundings but when she registers the warm and loving feeling of the strong arms wrapped tightly around her.
She's home. She's with her husband, her beloved partner of many years. Sydney closes her eyes and settles back into Gage's embrace. The sound of the gunshot that almost killed her still reverberates in her ears, but the shooter can't harm her any more. She's safe here, safe with the man she loves. Her eyes reopen and she looks around her again as one disturbing thought keeps pounding through her mind: For how long?
"It's okay," Gage murmurs to her in his sleep. He strokes her back. He knows every tactic to reassure her, to calm her fright, and uses them all every day. But still, she's afraid. She's so afraid that something is going to take her from him, or him from her. She weeps silently, wishing with all her heart for safety and living peace.
