Lex sighed as he slammed to a stop before the Kents' barn; he should have known better. He jumped out and strode over to where his boyfriend stood, looking utterly sheepish. "This -- " Lex waved his hands at Clark. "This -- This is not what one wears to dine with the Governor, Clark!"
"I'm sorry, Lex." Clark looked truly sorrowful. "It's just . . . Dad's sick, and Bessie had her calf, and I had to help deliver it, and then the tractor got stuck -- "
"And here you are, a half hour until the time we're supposed to meet the Governor and my Father, covered in soil and -- and -- " Lex's nose wrinkled. "Clark, you're delicious, but you smell worse than fertilizer."
"I haven't had time to take a shower -- "
"Go get one. I'll be waiting." They'd miss the dinner with the Governor, Lex thought, sighing and turning away, but there was always time for dinner for two.
